Election Day 2012

In Social Studies Class we have been studying the Presidential Election. On November 6th, 2012 all third graders did a mock election. Please view the following photos from the day. The final count was Barack Obama 128 and Mitt Romney 35. We learned many things about voting, candidate, campaigning, electoral votes, poll, ballot, and Presidential terms.

"Walk Day"

This is our new fish tank in Mrs. Butterfield's Classroom.  It is being used by Mrs. McKenna's Class also for Science.  We are studying the Ecosystem. The fish are guppies and we like to watch them swim.  We feed them every other day.  There is algae, snails, and pretty blue, brown, and black rock in the tank, too.  Sometimes the air filter makes some bubbly noises when it is loose.  We just have to tighten the tube.

This is our "Walk Day" to the Middle School on Oct. 3, 2012.
We walked around the track two times to get some good exercise and then stopped to take some pictures by the football equipment.  We felt good!

Veterans - Charlie and Norma

                                                                      Charlie and Norma

Charlie and Norma came to our classroom in September to recognize Veterans.  Charlie has been a para trooper in the Armed Forces and Norma's husband was a Navy Veteran. We were also reading about the American Flag in Reading. So, they came to show us how to fold the flag properly, like at a funeral for a veteran. We read what each fold meant as a part of the ceremony.  It is always great to have them visit. They are part of the cooking staff in our Storm Lake Elementary Kitchen.

Mrs. McKenna's Class -2012-2013

Mrs. McKenna's Class for this year 2012-2013.

What a Great Looking Group of Children!

There are 23 students in our Third Grade Classroom. We have a new student Andrea on the far right. She comes from Colorado. We welcome her to our Third Grade Classroom.  We have a seven day rotation for Specials. After our Special for the day, we get a snack. We love the carrots, grapes, and apples the best.

So far this year, we have been discussing Christopher Columbus and Map Skills in Social Studies. Soon plan to discuss the Immigrates who came to America to start our Unit on the Native Americans.  We love this unit because we get to make projects and put them in the glass cases in the lunchroom for all other students to ooh and ah over.

Math we are learning new strategies for breaking addends and equality.   We love cursive writing which is Handwriting Without Tears. It is more like manuscript.

We are doing organization for 6+1 Traits of Writing with the emphasis on the book called, The Important Book. Each child picked an object associated with school and are following the same pattern as this book.

In Science we are learning about the Ecosystem. We now have a fish tank with guppies.

Stay tune for more information in the near future..
